“Journey to the End of the Universe.”
In this Discovery Channel documentary, director Yawar Abbas uses graphics to simulate a journey from Earth to the edge of the universe. Viewers first virtually traverse the solar system, learning details about each planet and its satellites, then reach the nearest star to the sun, Alpha Centauri, and then follow it to the boundaries of the Milky Way and beyond. The graphics in “Journey to the End of the Universe” were developed based on data obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The narrator for the project was actor Alec Baldwin.

“Black Hole Hunters.”
The BBC project about one of the major scientific breakthroughs in astrophysics in the twenty-first century begins in 2017. That’s when scientist Shepherd Doleman and a team of fellow astronomers began developing the Event Horizon project to prove the existence of black holes. Before that, because of the strong gravity, no object could get close enough to them to capture and not fall down the “wormhole.

“Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking.”
The multi-part documentary project “Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking” of the Discovery Channel is a true classic of the popular science genre. The host of the series, filmed in 2010 – Professor Stephen Hawking, who in simple and clear language tells the full story of cosmology: from the “Big Bang” to the possible end of the galaxy. The famous scientist also shares his thoughts on the most interesting mysteries and mysteries of the universe – the possibility of intelligent life on other planets and time travel – and offers to dream about the possibilities for humanity in the future. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch voices Hawking’s thoughts in the project.

“The Last One on the Moon”.
British director Mark Craig’s documentary The Last Man on the Moon is the life story of astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon. The man landed on the surface of the Earth’s satellite three times — in 1966, in 1969 and finally in 1972 as commander of Apollo 17.

“Space: Space and Time.”
Another genre classic on our list. “Space: Space and Time” with American astrophysicist Neil Tyson is a remake of scientist Carl Sagan’s iconic 1980 science-popular series. The series consists of 13 parts. As in the original version, the host travels through time and space on a “ship of the imagination,” recounting the major scientific discoveries of the last centuries, from the birth of the universe to the events of 2014, when the project ended.

In the summer of 1970, Pittsburgh Pirates baseball pitcher Doc Ellis went to visit his buddy in Los Angeles during halftime. Over the course of several days, the guys spent their time consuming hallucinogens and stimulants, drinking alcohol, and listening to Jimi Hendrix records. Until one day Ellis realized that today – in the midst of an acid trip – there were two games waiting for him. He took the field and played a no-hitter, the best game of his career. “Minding the Gap (2018).
Documentary filmmaker Bing Liu has made a film about his friends, twenty-something guys living out their youth in Rockford, Illinois. We don’t want to spoil the viewing experience by revealing the plot, let’s just say that this film begins as a story of young people in love with skateboarding and ends with a sad panorama of domestic violence in a depressed post-industrial city.

“Andre the Giant” (Andre the Giant, 2018)
If you liked the way “The Last Dance” was filmed, chances are you’ll like “Andre the Giant,” too. The film tells the story of wrestling legend Andre, 2’24”, and his life – brilliant in the ring, and full of pain outside of it.

Spend your evening watching documentaries that dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s of some gastronomic questions.

DOUBLE PORTS.
A film that will make fast food lovers reconsider their gastronomic habits. This is the project of Morgan Spurlock, a director, screenwriter and protagonist who risked being subjected to a rigorous experiment. Spurlock wanted to find out and show the world what happens to the body of a healthy person who eats only at McDonald’s for a month.

THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT FOOD.
This is a science series produced by the BBC which consists of 6 episodes of 45 minutes each. The series debunks gastronomic myths and discovers new healthy facts. This work is divided into separate topics “how to become”: beautiful, slim, the best, desirable. The authors tell why some people eat a lot and don’t gain weight, whether red wine affects heart health, whether heavy drinking helps improve the skin, which macronutrient is more nourishing, etc. This series is the kind of self-education that will be useful in everyday life.

WANT TO CHANGE
Particularly impressionable be warned: this film very convincingly promotes raw eating. This type of diet is shown as a panacea for people with complex and incurable diseases: inspiring examples of the “healing” of obesity and cancer sufferers by switching to fruits and vegetables. The filmmakers also show the harsh truth about sugar and its substitutes. It’s worth watching, but consult a doctor before making any serious decisions about lifestyle changes.

FAST FOOD NATION.
A feature film about the underside of the fast food industry with a stellar cast. The film is based on Eric Schlosser’s book of the same name, which describes the industry’s harm to both health and the economy. Viewers are exposed to all the dark and brutal truth: the hardest part is about the desperate situation of guest workers in slaughterhouses with actual footage from the slaughterhouse.

FORKS INSTEAD OF KNIVES
The basis of this documentary is the research of two independent scientists. The film describes the results of their work in detail, and they will not please fans of meat and dairy products. The consumption of animal protein has a devastating effect on the human body, in particular with its inclusion in the daily diet cancerous tumors grow and develop faster and more intensively. With dairy products, too, everything is not so optimistic: the acid that the body produces when consuming dairy products is neutralized only by the calcium from the bones.

DESPERATE TASTERS DEPART.
A light and witty series produced by the BBC about life and nutrition in different eras. The main characters of the series are comedian Sue Perkins and restaurant critic, writer, and foodie Giles Koren. The pair “travel through time,” traveling to a particular era for a week, fully adopting the lifestyle and food principles of the time. Before each new adventure, the actors measure all their body measurements and track the changes afterwards.

“The Grizzly Man.
A biography of one of nature’s foremost conservation enthusiasts, Timothy Treadwell, who has devoted his life to saving grizzlies from human influence and fostering responsible environmental stewardship. In 2003, he and his girlfriend, also a researcher, were killed by bears while filming a documentary about grizzlies preparing for hibernation: it is the fall hunt for food that makes grizzlies especially dangerous to humans.

“In Jackson Heights.”
In New York’s most cosmopolitan neighborhood, Jackson Heights, change is ripe: local landlords are jacking up prices and it seems that soon you’ll find the usual supermarket and Starbucks instead of convenience stores and eateries across every street. Diverse, chaotic, filled with people of all religions and backgrounds, Jackson Heights is slowly surrendering under the onslaught of global capitalism, and American documentary classic Frederick Wiseman is watching. For 50 years, he’s been documenting a changing America — with no voice-over or talking heads — filming the complex and inscrutable life around him, from UC Berkeley to high school students in the ’60s.

“Without Sunshine.”
Often called one of the best documentaries ever made, the ’80s experiment from French legend Chris Marker is a movie about the nature of memory, the freshness of impression and the constant inner monologue that accompanies the traveler and explorer. Marker’s essay depicts several geographic and aesthetic polarities — technologized Japan, commercial America, spontaneous Iceland and the still wild Guinea-Bissau — with a female voice reading out fictional letters from the film’s fictional operator with the fabled name Sandor.

“Monterey Pop.”
There were two major music event films in the ’60s, “Woodstock” and “Monterey Pop,” made one year apart. In “Monterey” (to the director’s credit, films about Bob Dylan, John Lennon and David Bowie) it is obvious that the “summer of love” crowd has not yet turned into a flood of undressed people dressed in hippie fashion. “Monterey Pop,” a festival attended primarily for the music and secondarily for the buzz and nature, registers a transition to another quality and a new scale of Janis Joplin, Ravi Shankar, The Who and Simon & Garfunkel.

“Good Old Frida.”
In a small British cottage, the filmmakers find the elderly Frieda, a girl who worked as a typist and, as a teenager, became the keeper of The Beatles fan club. From the band’s first day performing in the Liverpool cellars until the breakup, when tens of thousands of fan regrets were sent to the studio, Frida spent a lot of time with the Beatles: as the invisible heroine of Richard Lester’s comedies, accompanying them on their star-studded journey. “Good Old Frida” is a tender film about friendship, the juxtaposition of stardom and unremarkable living, and why the world, including Frida, was head over heels in love with The Beatles.

Documentary style films are somewhat different from the usual ones, where brilliant acting with all sorts of special effects comes to the fore. Instead, the factual film strikes with its sincerity and urgency, and the choice of topics is very, very wide, which cannot but please the viewer.

Each of the individual films presents whole, unique worlds; they are so natural, so relevant to our perception that they serve as the most powerful catalyst for expanding world perception.

Earthlings (2005)
Some viewers dismiss this film with a bias, willfully refusing to continue watching it, and this often happens after encountering the first documentary footage.

Some cite the excessive violence, others the obviousness of the material presented by the director; and this is only natural, for the brutal, barbaric scenes from Earthlings can evoke very contradictory feelings in a person maimed by wearing a hopeless veil over his eyes.

Oceans (2009).
An endless love of the mysteries and power of the underwater world underlay this work; it portrays the true beauty and exuberance of the silent, raging oceans and the looseness and grace of their inhabitants.

Throughout the film the viewer is alone with his thoughts, there is a pleasant opportunity to relax and abstract from the hustle and bustle. This happens due to the originality of the author’s approach, which excludes the presentation of scientific information, apparently, pointing to their imaginary. In principle, no words are needed to realize the true perfection of the water element.

Samsara (2011).
The uninterrupted flow of pleasure given to the viewers of “Samsara” is based on tranquility and natural beauty.

It shows the complexity of life in all its infinite planes. One can see the almost total absence of acting in any of its various forms. This is real life – millions, billions of living beings, closely related to each other, but, unfortunately, not fully understanding the strength and eternity of these relationships.

Koyaaniscatsi (1982)
Translated from the Indian language, “Koyaaniscatsi” means a disorderly, insane life on the fragile verge of disintegration of all that one has; it is an unstable state that requires qualitative changes in the name of continuing to live on.

The details of this film seem to open one’s eyes, helping one to slip out of the clutches of disharmony. As you watch Koyaanisqatsi, you get a sense of the tragic discrepancy between the grandeur of nature and the vanity of human life, which condemns people to loneliness and is dangerous with destruction and catastrophe.

Microcosmos (1996)
An exciting journey of an hour and a half into the center of a planet where all distances are measured in millimeters. The microcosm is home to fantastic creatures that are surrounded by impenetrable wilds of grass thickets, enormous balloon-like dewdrops, and exciting suspense.

What is the reason for creativity? How do you notice the amazing in everyday things? How do you develop your thinking outside the box? These are the questions our selection of documentaries on creativity will answer.

Why are we creative? 2018.
For nearly 25 years, from 1994 to 2018, Herman Wasker made every effort to arrange interviews with Jim Jarmusch, David Lynchm, David Bowie, caught Michael Gorbachev, Brian Eno, Quentin Tarantino and many others in the hallways. From each of them he wanted to know why they were creative, why they became creative, and what is creativity in general? For some of them it is a talented father, for others it is a strict upbringing and the eternal overcoming of oneself, the attempts to combine the ways of life of different cultures in one’s head. Interestingly, Slavoj Žižek leveled them all with his answer, “We are all creative. The problem is giving those ideas the right shape. Real creativity is order. Every idiot can have bursts of genius madness. I don’t care about them. At the end of the day, it’s all about order. The film makes you realize that anyone can be creative. The main thing is to find an interesting point of effort.

Why does one create?
This vivacious and funny film is reminiscent of the Arzamas commercials, in which entire layers of eras and cause-and-effect relationships are shown in a clever visual form in 25 minutes. It won the Academy Award for Best Short Documentary in 1969, and in 2002 the Library of Congress selected it as particularly culturally, historically or aesthetically significant. It all starts with a primitive hunt, and through warlords, scientists, and artists comes to the world we know. “Why Man Creates?” seems to encapsulate everything on which the horizons of modern man are built.

Design Thinking. 2012.
Design Thinking is a creative methodology that helps to come up with products and services that people really need. In this film we collected positions of representatives from design and business, who influenced the world by their work. Each reveals how and why design thinking affects society, culture and sales. And also how we can organize the process of inventing in the age of uncertainty and incessant change to make our lives and the lives of those around us better and more comfortable.

Rams
Dieter Rams is the designer who set the foundation for the visual language of modern industrial products. He tried to make calculators, razors, turntables and other consumer electronics intuitive to use. Where the commercial director put the Braun logo larger, Rams defended the convenience of form and resolved contradictions to find the most elegant end result. By his example, Dieter Rams inspired former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive to visualize the legendary brand’s appliances, as well as many other contemporary designers.
